What is Board Certification?

When considering plastic surgery, it is important to know the level of training and certification your surgeon has. Currently, board certification is the universally accepted method of determining whether or not a surgeon has had adequate training to prepare for the scope of his or her specialty. The American Board of Medical Specialties was developed to provide for quality assurance in the field of medicine. This board then set up specific certifying boards in each specialty. Currently, the only specialty performing plastic surgery recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties is the American Board of Plastic Surgery. To become board certified in plastic surgery, a physician must complete medical school and at least three years of general surgery or a residency in ear, nose and throat surgery, followed by board certification in that specialty. After a surgeon satisfies these minimum requirements, he or she is eligible for entrance into a plastic surgery residency. Plastic surgical residencies typically last from two to three years, after which the surgeon is required to practice locally for two years before applying for admission to the certification examination. Upon successful completion of a written examination a surgeon is eligible for the two-day long oral examination process, which may include all of the cases performed by the surgeon. Board certification in plastic surgery is granted after successful completion of the oral examination. The board certification in plastic surgery is a long and arduous process. The goal is to provide a high level of competence for these surgeons achieving this level. Dr. Kierney is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. In addition Dr. Kierney is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Can I Finance my Surgery?

Financing plastic surgery is becoming increasingly popular. People finance many major purchases these days, and because of financing options, plastic surgery is readily available to a greater number of people than ever before.

Although your insurance may cover surgery for reconstructive reasons, such as after accidental trauma or repairing damage suffered from disease, surgeries for purely cosmetic reasons are generally not covered by insurance. In addition, some surgeries that are reconstructive, such as breast reconstruction following a mastectomy or a breast reduction for painfully large breasts, are not covered by all insurance companies. If your insurance will not cover a procedure you want or if you do not have insurance, these reconstructive surgeries can sometimes be financed.

Patients commonly finance their surgeries to alleviate the need to use up existing savings, to conserve the credit line on existing credit cards, or enable them to have the surgery when they want.

The office of Dr. Kierney is happy to assist you in your consideration of financing your cosmetic surgery. To finance your surgery you will need to fill out a short credit application to give back to the doctor's office. Generally helpful for favorable credit is a good 2-year residence, work and credit history. If you have had problems with credit in the past, the financing company may then request additional information. A trusted friend or relative might finance the surgery for you. The financing does not need to be in the patient's name, but it is important to know that whoever fills out and signs the financing application is ultimately responsible for the account.

Once credit is approved, the financing company will pay for your surgery and you will make monthly payments. You may be asked to place a small down payment for your surgery. Financing companies will generally charge an interest rate similar to that of credit cards. If you have a competitive credit card with a very good rate, you can also charge your surgery costs to your credit card.

In summary, plastic surgery can be paid for in advance, put on your credit card, financed through the doctor's office or any combination of these options. Financing may open the door to having the surgery you want now, but a consultation with a qualified surgeon to discuss the risks and benefits of the surgery is your first step towards realizing your goals.
